La Veta School District RE-2 is launching a Medical Assistant career and technical education pathway in partnership with Trinidad State College and Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center. Students take college courses (courses for Medical Assistant leading to industry certification) that earn both college credit and progress toward an industry credential. The Medical Assistant Instructor is the La Veta staff member who delivers these courses on site each day, supported by recorded lessons and course materials from Trinidad State College's Medical Assisting Program Professor.
The instructor runs the daily class block, keeps the classroom and technology running, makes sure work gets done and turned in, administers tests and quizzes in coordination with the college, posts grades in Alma, and transports students to and from lab sessions as needed. This is a half-time position hired and paid by La Veta RE-2 and well suited to a dependable local person who is good with teenagers, organized, and comfortable with technology. The healthcare content comes from the college through recorded lessons and course materials, so candidates do not need to arrive as healthcare experts, though experience in a healthcare setting is valuable.

Note on CTE Credentialing Because CTE program approval relies on the Medical Assisting classes taught at La Veta, the district will support the person hired in obtaining the Colorado CTE credential appropriate to the program through the Colorado Community College System. For reference, the CDE Secondary CTE Health Science credential requires 24 semester hours of related postsecondary coursework (including Anatomy and Physiology I and II and nine hours of health specialty content) or a current Colorado RN, physical therapy, athletic trainer, or EMT license, plus 4,000 hours of verified occupational experience or three years of teaching experience in the content area. Candidates who already hold or are eligible for this credential are encouraged to say so in their application.
Work is performed primarily in a classroom at the La Veta K-12 building with a live video connection to Trinidad State College. The position includes driving students in a district vehicle to lab sessions and site visits, which may include Trinidad State College and Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center in Walsenburg. The position requires the ability to move about a classroom and lab setting, operate standard instructional technology, and communicate clearly in person and online.
The salary range for this .5 FTE position is $18,772 to $24,945, which is one-half of the La Veta RE-2 certified salary schedule range of $37,544 (Teacher in Training) to $49,890 (MA Step 10). Placement on the schedule is based on education and verified experience. Benefits are offered per district policy for half-time employees, and the position participates in Colorado PERA. This position is supported by the Innovations in CTE grant for the 2026-27 school year; continuation beyond the grant period depends on program approval, enrollment, and available funding.
Submit a letter of interest, resume, and three professional references to Alan Nelms, Assistant Principal and CTE Director, at alan.nelms@lvk12.org or 719.742.6443. The position is open until filled.
